ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: An example of the new lighting that will be installed on Hummock Hill next week.

Hummock Hill will soon be even more spectacular and accessible with next week’s installation of 60 lights for pedestrians along the Queen Elizabeth Drive access.

A Council-appointed contractor will be installing the 60 solar bollards from Monday (May 6) next week. This will result in Queen Elizabeth Drive being closed to motor traffic while the lights are being installed but the road will remain open at all times for pedestrians.

The environmentally Total Green lights will be solar powered to light up 180 degrees downwards, lighting the path only for the safety of evening and night-time walkers. Council Project Officer Sam Bourne said the asymmetrical lighting opens up another area of the city for people to enjoy at all times of the day.

“Hummock Hill is such an iconic feature of our city and a popular walking, cycling and tourist area,” Sam said.

“These lights will make it even more pleasant and safe to take the road up to Hummock Hill whether it be early in the morning, in the evening or night for some spectacular views or just some healthy exercise.

“We’re rapt with the Total Green product as they will be solar powered, low maintenance and fauna friendly.

“Their 180 degree luminescence is much brighter, using all the energy a 360 degree light would, with half the lights, making the unit work much better, focusing more light where we actually need it.

“They create a wonderful spectacle and a safe access on Hummock Hill without creating any unnecessary light pollution.”

Queen Elizabeth Drive will be re-opened to vehicles each day once the contractor has finished working. Council expect this $58,000 project to be complete by the end of next week and thanks motorists in advance for their patience.
