PROMOTING WHYALLA: Mayor Clare McLaughlin has put her hand up for several key boards.

The pro-active work by Council and renewed growth of our city has been recognised with Whyalla to host a Local Government Association (LGA) regional board meeting this year.

The LGA meeting in July will draw mayors and senior council officials from throughout the state to Whyalla and the Eyre Peninsula. Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin has been using her recently-appointed positions with the LGA, Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association (EPLGA) and Spencer Gulf Cities board to secure Whyalla as a venue for one of the two regional LGA meetings held each year.

"The LGA board meeting in July will bring an immediate boost to Whyalla with up to 50 people staying in our city to attend the two-day event" Mayor McLaughlin

Mayor McLaughlin was earlier this year appointed to a position on South Australia's LGA board as a SA Region Organisation of Councils (SAROC) representative while also elected deputy chair of both the EPLGA and the Spencer Gulf Cities board.

Council CEO Chris Cowley said the hard work by Mayor McLaughlin to promote Whyalla, with her representation on these key decision-making boards, is now paying off.

“Mayor McLaughlin has gone above and beyond to put her hand up for positions on these boards and it is paying dividends for Whyalla in many different ways,” Mr Cowley said.

“To have our Mayor representing Whyalla in senior roles with the LGA, EPLGA and the Spencer Gulf Cities board puts our city squarely in the spotlight and positions us perfectly to take advantage of many opportunities.

“When it comes time to make decisions and put strategies in place for South Australia … our city is going to be front and centre in the discussions.”

Mayor McLaughlin said her appointments were also helping build relationships throughout the state while showcasing Whyalla when it comes to business and tourism development and opportunities.

“The LGA board meeting in July will bring an immediate boost to Whyalla with up to 50 people staying in our city to attend the two-day event,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

“It also puts us on the map with important local government officials and regional leaders visiting our city to see first-hand, and spread the word, what we are doing in our city and what we’ve got to offer.”

The July board meeting will be hosted by LGA President, and Tumby Bay Mayor, Sam Telfer in the Whyalla Council Chamber on Darling Terrace.
