The City of Whyalla has been encouraged by the positive comments in the community and social media following the announcement that South Australian company Maritime Constructions will build our new jetty.
CEO Chris Cowley said the patience of people in the community was also appreciated as Council continues with this unique project that will benefit everyone in Whyalla and put the city on the map.
Now the construction schedule has been established by Maritime Constructions, Council will be embarking on a series of public engagement exercises to keep everyone in the loop as the project progresses.
2019 Jetty construction schedule
- Contract with Maritime Construction to be signed in February
- Supplier selection and management plan in February
- Fabrication and procurement in March
- Demolition of existing jetty in April to May
- Pile driving begins end of May
- Structural completion in December
- Open for public use in January, 2020.
Council officers will be at the Westland Shopping Centre on Thursday, March 14 between 4pm and 7pm with information on the new jetty and to answer questions. There will then be a public information evening from 6pm on Thursday, March 21 at the Whyalla Public Library where Council officers will again provide information and answer questions.
“The community has been on-board with this project from the start,” Mr Cowley said.
“From the first public consultations when the community voted for this design, to the local input through written correspondence, social media feedback and general discussions in the community … this has been Whyalla’s very own project."
Of the 359 public submissions for the preferred design of the jetty, 133 people voted for Option G (the loop) while another 79 were in favour of Option C. Of the other designs, 59 were in favour of Option F with 58 voting for Option B.
“It’s taken a bit longer than we anticipated as we took on management of the project to ensure as much local labour and materials are used in our jetty," Mr Cowley said.
“We understand some people are getting a bit impatient.
“We are too … but the proper processes had to be followed in such a complex project and we needed to make sure this will be a jetty that will last for another 80 years or more.
“Now that the tender process has established a South Australian company as the best option to build our game-changing jetty, we want to continue sharing the good news with the community with regular updates as this project progresses.”
Mr Cowley said there would be more public sessions, information distribution, feature stories, videos and representations once the demolition of the old jetty begins and the construction of the new jetty starts.

It seems they are giving regular updates and sharing the process as transparently as possible, it's a good thing. Tender processes for this kind of construction are fair and awarded to the appropriate contractors. Go Council!
