Whyalla’s signature ship will come to life in August with a spectacular one-off light display.
illuminart’s Travelling Light show is coming to Whyalla as part of a grand South Australia’s Living Artists Festival (SALA) Projection Art Tour. In partnership with the City of Whyalla, it will be lighting up the HMAS Whyalla at the Visitor and Information Centre with a free event on Saturday, August 10.
Travelling Light is the final stage of illuminart’s Port to Port project, assisted by the Australia Council for the Arts, and supported locally by Council in projects involving Whyalla children, seniors, schools and community members to create stories. The show will feature some of the unique stories that have been made in Whyalla, combined with other animations from across South Australia that connect Whyalla with other Ports and regions.
Artistic Director of illuminart, Cindi Drennan said the brightly sparkling program of animated projections on the ship will create an expansive and glowing area much larger than a cinema.
“The dramatic mid-winter show is designed to get a crowd together for a bright colourful and invigorating injection of creativity, combining history, humour and warmth into a single event, celebrating creative storytelling during South Australia’s Living Artists Festival,” Cindi said.
“The creative stories depicting South Australia’s heritage in a joyful way, are all about appreciating the beautiful and interesting place you live in.”
illuminart is roving regional South Australia in a unique odyssey … touring more than 2000 kilometres to illuminate silos, town halls and landmarks, to share locally made animated stories and projection art with South Australians.
“Our tour is helping to bring some warmth and happiness to people in winter time everywhere it goes," Cindi said.
"We are very fortunate to be able to bring this project out to Whyalla during SALA and will be looking forward to sharing this celebration of arts and culture with everyone."
The free projection event (with a gold coin donation welcome) will run for about hour and will be viewed from inside the grounds of the visitor centre.
