BOOK FIRST: Don't put your hard waste out before you have organised to have it picked up.

Tuesday, October 29, 2019

A customer request from a Whyalla resident serves as a timely reminder to everyone about the hard waste pick-up service and how it must be used.

A resident rang Council recently to report that a lounge suite had been dumped on the nature strip in Patten Street.

As this resident rightly pointed out, this practice is making streets look unsightly with some people constantly putting hard waste on the nature strip which is making the area “look awful”.

“Some people seem to think it is okay to just dump things on their nature strips in the hope someone will pick it up and a lot of the back streets are starting to look unsightly,” the resident said.

“I’ve noticed one house in particular is always putting hard waste on the nature strip and leaving it there for weeks … it is annoying and makes the area look awful.

“I’m wondering if something can be put out to residents as a reminder to not put hard waste on your nature strip unless you have arranged for a pick-up the next day.”

“It is not acceptable to just dump your unwanted goods outside the front of your house and expect someone to pick up your rubbish" - Sam Bowman

Council Director City Development, Sam Bowman agreed and thanked the resident for their positive and constructive customer enquiry.

“We appreciate this sort of feedback and the resident is spot-on with their comments,” Sam said.

“It is not acceptable to just dump your unwanted goods outside the front of your house and expect someone to pick up your rubbish.

“We have contracted Bedford Phoenix to give each household one free hard waste pick-up each year but this must be organised in advance and your rubbish must only be put out the night before the organised pick-up.”

Residents putting rubbish out the front of their house or on median strips without having organised for it to be pickup can be liable for substantial fines.

“Council doesn’t want to fine people but if they put rubbish out without bothering to make a simple call to organise the free hard-waste pick-up, we will have no other option,” Sam said.

“It’s not hard, you ring 8647 7711 organise a date and then put your hard waste out the day before the date they give you.”

The 2019 Kerbside collection calendar mailed out to all residents contains a reminder about the FREE hard waste pick-up and information on what items are acceptable for collection. To arrange your free hard waste pick-up call Bedford on 8647 7711 or via email crichards@bedfordgroup.com.au The approved items must be put out in a neat pile at the determined collection date.
