GFG Alliance is keeping Council informed on the progress of its transformation program.

The owners and operators of the Whyalla steelworks have let Council and the community know about the the work it is doing on the new Whyalla Rail and Heavy Structural Mill with geotechnical work beginning on-site in Whyalla to provide data required for the design engineering stage.

Here's the statement from GFG Alliance:

Liberty teams are working across the globe as the innovative business continues to progress in bringing its exciting Whyalla Transformation Program to life.

Liberty Primary Steel representatives are currently in Buttrio, Italy, with equipment manufacturing partner Danieli, working on early design elements for the new Whyalla Rail and Heavy Structural Mill.

PARTNERSHIP: Liberty Primary Steel representatives meeting with Danieli representatives in Italy.

Together with China’s CISDI Engineering Co – who are working on the new Pulverised Coal Injection plant - they will be responsible for the first portion of the transformation worth more than A$600m, as announced at last December’s ‘Big Reveal’ by Executive Chairman, Sanjeev Gupta.
Liberty Primary Steel Executive Managing Director, Theuns Victor, said steady progress had continued since the major announcement.

“The ‘Big Reveal’ was significant for the community, as they could finally see our vision for the long-term future of our operations,” Theuns said.

"We are now building on that excitement as we prepare to enter the detailed design stage that will determine this new facility’s capabilities.

“The design work will continue throughout this year, culminating in construction.”

Members of the Transformation Team are spending several weeks in Italy, closely engaged in the early design phase.

In parallel, geotechnical work has begun on-site in Whyalla to provide data required for the design engineering stage. This work will enable Liberty to understand more about how the new infrastructure will interact with the ground.

Theuns said it was great to be able to demonstrate continued progress on the transformation, which is vital to Whyalla’s future.

"As Sanjeev highlighted last year, this transformation will vastly improve the safety, operational, financial and environmental performance of the operations, paving the way for Whyalla to become an enticing, global hub for innovative industry,” Theuns said

“The Whyalla Transformation Program will establish our operations as a viable and sustainable facility, producing 1.8 million tonnes of high-quality, high-end steel per year – broadening our product range and opening up new markets.”

“We look forward to providing further updates as the program continues to reach important milestones.”
