DARING: Mr Charisma during one of his escape acts
Whyalla is set for a fiery dose of charisma, weaved around magic and wrapped in chains at this year’s Australia Day celebrations.
Magician and escape artist Jamie Nelson, aka Mr Charisma, will be performing at the Whyalla Australia Day celebrations in Ada Ryan Gardens on Saturday, January 26. His act involves a mix of magic, fire and knife juggling, fire breathing and the amazing “Houdini” escape act where is tied up in chains.
“You’ll see lots of excitement and plenty of entertainment,” Jamie said.
“The fire and knife juggling is literally on the edge and I’ll be challenging myself to escape from a series of chains in one minute.”
Jamie is one of only a few performers in Australia still doing escape acts. He comes from a long family line of circus and carnival entertainers dating back to 1885.
He moved to Whyalla early last year and is loving the city as he performs at various venues.
“My family has always been in the magic and entertainment field and I’m really enjoying performing as a local here in Whyalla,” Jamie said.
“My grandfather, Charlie Nelson, was a famous showman and magician in South Australia and he’s passed on the magic to me.”
Mr Charisma goes on stage at 6pm for his exciting act. He will also be helping our resident D’Faces magician Rob Golding as they conduct circus workshops earlier in the day.
The Whyalla Australia Day celebrations kick off at 4pm on Saturday, January 26 in Ada Ryan Gardens with free entertainment, activities and a fireworks display at about 9pm. The Whyalla Australia Day citizens of the year will be presented while a group of Whyallians will take their citizenship vows on the day.
