One of the founders of Ripples, Karen Harrison said the Community Grant funding was vital to bring the Tough Love Seminar back to Whyalla on November 16. Ripples member Lisa Taylor has also been a huge driving force behind the scenes to host the seminar again.
On behalf of myself and Whyalla Ripples I would like to thank the Whyalla Council for granting this money,” Karen said.
“$2000 is a lot of money to raise on our own in the community and goes a long way to making this seminar possible.”
The Tough Love Seminar returns to Whyalla presented by the Peter Lyndon-James who is the founder and chief executive officer of Shalom House, Australia’s strictest rehabilitation centre based in Perth.
When Peter was last in town he spoke to nearly 1000 students in Whyalla along with the Tough Love Seminar for families and friends who have loved ones struggling with an addiction. Peter is a former ICE addict who has turned his life around and is now dedicated to helping others in similar situations.

STORY BEHIND THE TOUGH LOVE SEMINAR
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Shalom House, Australia’s strictest rehabilitation centre based in Perth, Peter Lyndon-James gives a presentation aimed at equipping families with the tools to help their loved ones overcome addiction.
Mr Lyndon-James, a recipient of numerous Australian of the Year awards, is a former addict who has turned his life around, after spending 26 years in and out of prisons and institutions. Methamphetamine is the evilest drug to hit the face of this planet and we’ve only seen the beginning of it. It’s going to get bigger and bigger,” said Mr Lyndon-James.
“People are smoking meth like they did cannabis not realising that the effects don't just affect them but the whole family and in turn its structure. By the time they realise, it is too hard to turn back.”
Mr Lyndon-James said his method of tough love, or cause and effect, is about showing families how to bring a person to the point of wanting to change, rather than forcing them.
“Often parents and family members think they’re doing the right thing trying to help their loved ones in addiction by putting a roof over their head and paying their bills but they are in fact doing the wrong thing.
“It is sad to see that some of them are prolonging the inevitable by shielding their children from the consequences of their choices.
“I’m not going to tell you what you want to hear, I’m going to tell you what you need to hear.”
Mr Lyndon-James believes that the community should not have to pay for the rehabilitation of drug addicts and runs a rehabilitation centre that doesn’t cost the government a cent using a self-sufficient funding model.
