The City of Whyalla is working on an extensive program of improvements for the Whyalla Recreation Centre.

Council works with the YMCA, which is responsible for the management of the centre, to maintain health and safety standards through regular maintenance of assets at the facility.

Recent works include the removal of a wall between the spa and main pool to provide lifeguards with a better line of vision to supervise the pool area. The chemical control equipment has been upgraded and a larger, more efficient, vacuum has been purchased to ensure that a high standard  of water quality is maintained..

The instalment of new lane ropes and holders has been completed after the old ones had deteriorated to a point where they had reached the end of their useful life.

Works in progress include a new aquatic entry point comprising of a new gate system to the pool area to ensure that young children cannot access the area without supervision. A UV water treatment system will be installed to assist with the chemical control upgrades in the pools to provide a greater guarantee of the water quality standard.

Aquatic access steps (called Platypus Steps) are on order following a request from the Whyalla Aqua Aerobics Group.

Maintenance of the spa is ongoing, a replacement heater for the sauna has been fitted with several other new features including new fire exit doors, a PA system and a disabled services facilities upgrade soon to be installed.

Director City Growth, Samantha Bowman said these projects demonstrate Council’s ongoing commitment to the safety and wellbeing of residents and members of the facility.

“We are dedicated to maintaining and upgrading our community assets, such as the Whyalla Recreation Centre, so we can keep providing a high standard of quality for our community,” Samantha said.

Council Manager Assets, Robert Grace said working in conjunction with YMCA has allowed council to act in a proactive manner, taking action to mitigate any potential risks.

“This is a great example of Council and YMCA working together to identify potential safety risks and upgrade facilities such as the wall removal between the spa and pool allowing lifeguards to better supervise the area,” Robert said.

While most of the work has been completed, the remaining upgrades may effect some areas of the leisure centre at various times. Contact the leisure centre on 8645 5488 for further information.
