GOOD JOB: The ship tours sign cleaned up this week by Council crews.

City of Whyalla crews have cleaned up some senseless graffiti on a welcome sign to our city.

Council was aware of a spate of graffiti on signs coming into Whyalla as reported by the Whyalla News this week. The HMAS Whyalla Ship tours sign was one of those signs hit with Council crews pushing this job up the list to make sure it was cleaned up before the Easter break.

CEO Chris Cowley said Council was reluctant to draw attention to these graffiti attacks as any publicity was often seen as a badge of honour for the offenders. The clean-up job from our Council crews was, however, something to be proud of.

“Because these nonsensical graffiti attacks were on the main highway, we’d like to think they were a senseless act by someone passing through,” Mr Cowley said.

“There is not much we can do to stop these sort of attacks out on the highway, and very little chance of obtaining a conviction even it was possible to identify the culprits, but we can act as quickly as we can to clean them up to maintain a tidy welcome to our city.

"Well done to our Council work crews and the Council officers who made this happen so quickly."

Mr Cowley said the public could, however, help prevent these attacks by reporting any acts of graffiti or vandalism to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
