Yvonne Geelan happy that Council has listened to suggestions
The City of Whyalla has listened to several constructive suggestions from residents including new easy- access pool steps at the Whyalla Recreation Centre lap pool.
Several residents put forward suggestions to help people get in and out of the pool, especially elderly pool goers, for the popular aqua aerobics class. One resident in particular, Yvonne Geelen was a key driver in getting this project moving by doing research into what solutions are available and approaching Mayor Clare McLaughlin with this information.
Yvonne has praised Council for acting on these concerns and giving recreation centre goers a hand getting in and out of the pool.
“I think it is absolutely fantastic, the steps are already helping and everyone in the aqua aerobics class has said it is great,” Yvonne said.
“It is great to see Council is listening to us and would I like to praise Mayor Clare McLaughlin and Council CEO Chris Cowley in particular for accelerating this case.”

Aqua aerobics instructor Rae mentioned the importance of enabling more people to come down and try this type of activity.
“Having these new steps is giving people, who wouldn’t normally come, the opportunity to get in the pool (and out),” Rae said.
“The majority of people in the aqua aerobics classes are elderly and it opens up new social options for them, the classes do promote health but they are definitely a great social activity.”

Marianne Haggas is delighted at the new access steps
Swimmers of all types benefit from the innovative design of the new Platypus Pool Steps - elderly, arthritic, expectant mothers, young learners or anyone who is uncomfortable with, or has difficulty using traditional vertical swimming pool ladders.
The new pool steps were a highlight in a recent round of upgrades currently being finished at the Rec centre including a new aquatic entry point, a wall removal for safety and new lane ropes to name a few.
Anyone interested in taking part in the aqua aerobics classes, or any activities at the Rec Centre, can call on 8645 5488 or drop in to the centre on Racecourse Road.
