COOL TIME: The pool proved a hit at the Norton Park event.
Almost 80 kids and parents made a huge splash on the last day of the school holidays at the City of Whyalla’s The Circus is Coming event at Norton Park.
The Circus is Coming involved circus act displays, circus trick workshops, a sausage sizzle and a massive water fight at the McRitchie Crescent reserve. As well as being a free, fun day for kids in the western suburbs, it was also a chance for them to have a say on what sort of main feature and play equipment they would like to see in the park.
Council Youth Development Officer, Gail Rostig said the kids that came along had a ball and gave some positive feedback on park redevelopment. Helping to organise the day were Council Arts & Cultural Facilitator Deb Hughes, D'Faces, headspace and the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) with support from Whyalla police.
“It was great to see the kids from that area have a chance to come to ‘their’ local park, have some fun and have a say in what the park could look like,” Gail said.
“This was a perfect way to get the kids involved in something that is going to benefit the community.
“Everyone had a ball, there were kids in the pools we provided, kids doing circus tricks and then the huge water fight was so much fun.”
The City of Whyalla has allocated nearly $400,000 to redevelop a city park. Funding of $183,000 for community amenity upgrades was obtained from the previous State Government and must be used on Council-owned amenities.
Residents can still have their say on how a redeveloped Norton Park would look by filling out a simple, no-strings-attached survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2G73VWV
Hard copies of the survey are also available at the Council front counter on Darling Terrace and at the Whyalla Public Library on Ekblom Street.
