NAIDOC kicks off this Friday in Whyalla

The City of Whyalla is continuing its support of NAIDOC Week this year and encouraging residents to attend the events held during the annual event.

NAIDOC Week starts officially on Sunday July 7, with a host of events running for the whole week, but will kick off early in Whyalla with the NAIDOC Week March on Friday July 5. Everyone is welcome to attend the march, aimed at celebrating and bringing awareness to NAIDOC week.

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

The celebrations continue with the Whyalla Community NAIDOC Awards at the Middleback Arts Centre on Monday, July 8. This is a ceremony to highlight and recognise outstanding achievers in the indigenous community.

City of Whyalla elected member, Councillor Tamy Pond, who is on the Whyalla NAIDOC committee and a member of Whyalla Reconciliation Working Group, said NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for the community to get together and celebrate indigenous culture.

“NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for everyone in Whyalla to celebrate and learn about indigenous culture and also for the indigenous community to share their culture,” Cr Pond said.

“Anyone can participate in NAIDOC week as this is a chance to celebrate all cultures in our diverse Whyalla Community.

“We would love the community to come to as many events as possible next week, we have a trivia night, community day, a Blue Light disco, but most importantly we want people to come to the Middleback Arts Centre on Monday morning for the Whyalla NAIDOC Awards to celebrate and recognise achievement in the Indigenous community.”

NAIDOC Week runs from Sunday to Sunday July 7 to 14 please see the posters below for a full list of events. For more information please refer to the event posters for contact information or contact Rebecca Page on 0412 298 625.
