COME ALONG: City of Whyalla Councillor Zia Westerman will be at the State Disability Inclusion Plan consultation and information session next week.
City of Whyalla Councillor Zia Westerman is urging residents to attend a public consultation/information session for the inaugural State Disability Inclusion Plan.
The State Government Department of Human Services has scheduled a session for Whyalla on Thursday April 18 at the Whyalla Public Library where people can hear about the plan and have their say.
The State Disability Inclusion Plan is one of the key pillars of the Disability Inclusion Act 2018. The final plan will set whole-of-government priorities and strategies for achieving a more inclusive South Australia in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
“It is an opportunity for them to tell the State Government what needs to be changed and put into the plan.” Cr Westerman
Cr Westerman, who is on Council’s Ageing and Disability Advisory Group, said this was a great opportunity for the community to come along and show why Whyalla is a leader in providing facilities that allow for the inclusion of people living with a disability.
“I think having the consultation of the State Disability Inclusion Plan in Whyalla is a fantastic idea,” Cr Westerman said.
“Being a small town it is hard to get things like this here, so when something does happen it is a massive deal.
“This consultation will give the Whyalla people a chance to express their thoughts and to discuss the many issues that are easily overlooked or just haven’t been thought of.
“It is an opportunity for them to tell the State Government what needs to be changed and put into the plan.”
A spokesperson from the Department of Human Services said the Whyalla session, which is one of five throughout South Australia, was a key opportunity to shape a whole-of-government approach.
“We’d like to hear ideas on how all South Australians with disability can better participate in social, economic and civil life,” the spokesperson said.
“We want to hear from people with disability (regardless of age), family members, carers and anyone who is interested in promoting access and inclusion.
“We’ll be asking questions like ‘What does inclusion and access mean to you?’
“Now is the time to have your say.”
The Whyalla session is on Thursday April 18 from 12pm – 2.30pm in the Whyalla Public Library’s Vicki Ledo Room at 7-9 Ekblom Street, Whyalla Norrie.
