The City of Whyalla is hosting a children’s film festival in September.

The 2019 Wide Angle Film Festival (WAFF) for Children is screening on September 8 at the D’Faces Hall with free admission.

The festival is 50 minutes of quality Australian and international child-produced films that reflect the lived experience of children with disability. They are made by children with disability or have participation from children with disability.

Organised by Council’s Arts and Cultural Facilitator Deb Hughes, the films in the festival are a combination of real life and animations. They have open captions, audio description, sensory screening (adjusted light/sound levels, social story and chill-out space), flashing light free triggers list while the D’Faces hall has access for people with mobility issues and a chill-out space.

Bardic Studio, the company behind WAFF, said the children’s festival can be viewed by all ages.

“WAFF is for everyone,” a spokesperson from Bardic Studio said.

“The opportunity to see people with disability on our screens is rare and the award-winning Australian and international short films in the Festival are entertaining and compelling.

“WAFF offers insights into connectedness and respectful interaction with others.

“Assumptions, attitudes, behaviours and stereotypes are challenged when people with disability demonstrate their capacity through filmmaking. Audiences have the opportunity to reflect on the built environments they inhabit and the channels of communication they prefer, promoting empathy and inclusivity.”

The FREE admission Whyalla Wide Angle Children’s Film Festival gets underway at 3pm on Sunday, September 8 at the D’Faces Hall at 14 Viscount Slim Ave, Whyalla Norrie.  For more information contact Deb Hughes on 8640 3444.
