A calendar featuring some of the best photos of our city has been released by Whyalla's local Variety SA Car 86 team.

The Whyalla 2020 Calendars showcase photos of attractions, landscapes and events as taken by community members.

The Car 86 crew, which is headed by team leader Susan Burgess, called for photos from the community for the 2020 calendar. The top 26 photos were then chosen by the local Variety team based on their quality of resolution, landscape format and ability to show features of Whyalla and our lifestyle.

These 26 photos were then displayed on Facebook for the Whyalla community to judge and vote as their favourite.

“We received over 75 entries from more than 25 local community members this year through a Facebook promotion to consider as part of the final 12 photos for the calendar,” Susan said.

“Once the photos were chosen the calendar was created with the support of Digital Print Australia, based in Adelaide.”

The Variety SA, Car 86 team also successfully applied for a Community Grant from the City of Whyalla to assist with the cost of printing.

“The calendars will be sent all over the world by the Whyalla community to family and friends, including countries such as England, Finland, America and Germany and, of course, Australia,” Susan said.

The front cover went to the photo with the most votes which was a shot of dramatic stormy weather over the foreshore taken from Hummock Hill by Michelle Cholodniuk.

"There was a storm coming in and the clouds looked fantastic, so I jumped in the car and drove all the way up Hummock Hill to get the photo," Michelle said.

"The rain was just starting to fall and I took this shot because it was so magical. When it came out the colours were really striking."

All proceeds from the Calendars go to Variety SA, through our local Variety fundraising team, Car 86, to support local South Australian children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.

The calendars, at $20 each, are available from MP Eddie Hughes office at Westland Shopping Centre, the Whyalla Visitor and Information Centre, Cherilee’s Nail Creations and Barry Hale Removals.
