Our city will be a hive of historical activity over the next two months as South Australia’s History Festival kicks off.
Whyalla will host nine of the 14 festival events and attractions on the Eyre Peninsula, from April 27 to May 31, as part of the statewide celebration of our heritage.
The Maritime Museum, HMAS Whyalla, Mt Laura Homestead Museum, Council chambers and Whyalla Steelworks will be hosting a range of events, tours, open days and information sessions during the festival.
The HMAS Whyalla and Whyalla Steelworks will have sunset/twilight tours along with the regular daytime tours. The Maritime Museum is celebrating with an Open Day for the 78th anniversary of the HMAS Whyalla along with a new temporary Navigation exhibition in the museum.
There will be pop-up exhibitions and an open day for Mother’s Day at the Mt Laura Homestead Museum. The City of Whyalla chambers will host a public information night on Whyalla: The Aboriginal Story.
Team leader at the Whyalla Visitor and Information Centre, home of the HMAS Whyalla and Maritime Museum, Teresa Coles said it was an exciting time for the city and history buffs.
“We had five events and activities last year so Whyalla has certainly got on-board and is growing with this fantastic statewide celebration of our history,” Teresa said.
“We have such wonderful history right here in Whyalla and great facilities like the ship, the museum and the Mt Laura Homestead to host these events and activities.
“The chance to see the HMAS Whyalla and the steelworks at twilight will be something special and the exhibitions at the Maritime Museum and Mt Laura Homestead Museum will be fascinating.
“We are so proud to be able to present our Aboriginal Story too with great thanks to our local indigenous owners of the land, the Barngarla people.”
