Community Event of the Year

Whyalla Christmas Pageant – Whyalla Apex Club

Service clubs are the backbone of our community and responsible for many events held in city.

Whyalla has many large events organised by Council or private promoters but one of the biggest events on the calendar, the Whyalla Christmas Pageant, is organised by a hard-working group of volunteers from the Whyalla Apex Club.

Like many community clubs these days, the Whyalla Apex Club isn’t flush with members but the members it does have, do a mighty job organising the spectacular pageant and after pageant fair. It is an event that brings out thousands of residents for an afternoon and evening of free entertainment.

The nominator of this event honed in on the family-aspect of the pageant and fair as the reason for the nomination.

“The pageant and fair provides an affordable family event that showcases the fantastic location of the Ada Ryan Gardens and the spirit of the Whyalla community,” the nominator said.

That almost sums it up but it is also about the countless hours that goes into these events that deserves so much recognition.

Not only does the Whyalla Apex Club organise the logistics of the event, which includes liaising with major sponsors GFG Alliance and the City of Whyalla to enable the entertainment to be free, it is the hands-on work on the day and the lead-up work in the weeks and months leading up and on the event which is truly remarkable.

POPULAR: Thousands of people line the streets for the Whyalla Christmas Pageant.

The Whyalla Apex Club members are the first on the ground in the early hours of the morning to set up and the last to leave late at night after the event has been run and thousands of families have gone away happy.

This year's event had to be organised twice when rain out on the first attempt but the Apex members just buttered up a second time and got the job done for the Whyalla community.

The Whyalla Christmas Pageant and the Whyalla Apex Club are worthy winners of the Community Event of the Year as this event is truly representative of the community.

The Whyalla Apex Club will receive its award tonight (Friday, January 25) before being honoured again at the Australia Day celebrations in Ada Ryan Gardens tomorrow (Saturday, January 26).
