MORE TO COME: Boral crews laying down roads as part of this year's roadworks program.
The City of Whyalla has proposed a $14m three-year plan for more than 40 kilometres of roadworks starting in the 2019-2020 financial year.
This is one of the highlights in the 2019-2020 Draft Annual Business Plan and Budget and one of the key points in a document Council would like residents’ feedback on. Council is conducting an extensive public consultation period on this draft document to gauge public opinion and take all views on board.
The $14m roadworks program, which would start in the 2019-2020 financial year, would one of the biggest undertaken by Council in recent times and will result in 43.8km of works over 40 roads in the next three years.
After spending $586,000 on roadworks this financial year, CEO Chris Cowley said the proposed $14m three-year program would allow Council to stay on pace with the continual road resurfacing, kerbing, pavement patching, asphalt and spray sealing required in the city and outlying areas.
“Roadworks is a rolling program throughout the city and the region that never ends,” Chris said.
“We know there are roads in urgent need of repair and this program will allow us to identify those roads, fix them and move on to the next most urgent areas.
“We’d love to fix every single road in Whyalla tomorrow but this simply isn’t possible, financially or logistically, but this program will keep us on track.
“This proposed program will allow us to keep knocking them over and providing more and more quality roads for the community.”
The draft business plan and budget contains information on the maintenance of existing services and new initiatives while following the strategic direction outlined in Council’s Strategic Plan, Long Term Management Plan and Infrastructure and Asset Management Plan.
Residents can submit their views on the vision and core values, community strategic plan framework, Council services, annual business plan and rates revenue. The document also contains information on Council’s achievements for 2018-19 and full financial statements for the year.
The 2019-2020 Draft Annual Business Plan and Budget, Rating Policy, Draft Summary Fees and Charges and Draft Long Term Financial Plan documents can be viewed online on at http://www.whyalla.sa.gov.au/publicconsultation or hard copies are available at the Council offices on Darling Terrace or the Whyalla Public Library.
