Calls to establish a Community Development Group for Youth Opportunities

Whyalla Mayor, Lyn Breuer has thrown her support behind establishing a Community Development Group to assist Youth Opportunities, a school-based personal leadership program for young people.

The Mayor hosted a meeting of Youth Opportunities representatives and local groups interested in the development of young people at the Council chambers last night (Thursday).

“There’s no doubt this program produces results and I am more than happy to be involved in the formation of a local group which can support this program,” said the Mayor.

“I urge anyone with an interest in our young people’s future to become involved,” she said.

Youth Opportunities CEO Peter Carey and Tom Cleland travelled to Whyalla to attend the meeting.youth opportunities

Mr Carey, who holds the SANFL record of 448 games played, said he is proud to be involved in an organisation that does such good work.

“I get a real thrill from the empowerment this program gives to young people, in just 10 weeks,” he said. “It is life-changing.”

“700 kids have gone through the Youth Opportunities program in Whyalla. With some community support, we will be able to reach a lot more,” he said.

Youth Opportunities operates in both metropolitan and regional South Australia. It has put 12,000 students through the Personal Leadership Program across the state.

The program offers year 10 students a one day per week training program that runs during the school term. Using positive psychology and cognitive therapy, the Personal Leadership Program engages and extends participants knowledge and skills in areas not typically part of their schooling but that are crucially important to life.

It is hoped a Community Development Group, based in Whyalla, will assist with fundraising, advocacy and mentorship opportunities. More information is available by contacting Youth Opportunities on 8240 3133 or by email youth@youthopps.com.au
