MORE SPACE: Council crews prepare the extra pathway around the skate bowl

The City of Whyalla has listened to the kids and is back working on some extras for the Wilson Park skate bowl.

The new bowl has been so popular over the school holidays, Council crews’ plans to put extra dirt down around the bowl for grass, a shade shelter, bins and solar lights had to be put on hold … it was just too busy to get in there and do the work.

With these plans temporarily on hold, Council’s Supervisor – Civil Works, Cliff Morris took the opportunity to go down the skate bowl and have a chat with the kids cutting it up with their scooters and skateboards. While the kids generally thought the bowl was pretty cool, they told Cliff there needed to be a wider concrete path around the bowl.

“The kids were loving it and came up to me with the idea for an extra wide path around the bowl,” Cliff said.

“They said the younger kids needed a bit more room to get out of the bowl and then to get around it and get past each other on the outside.

“We’ve taken that on board and this week we’re down there putting an extra 1.2m around the bowl as well as extra connecting and skating areas down to the main pathway.”

MORE FACILITIES: The new shade shelter at the skate bowl

A shade shelter has also been put in this week next to the skate bowl where a permanent bin will also be placed. The solar security lighting will be added soon.

Trucks are also down at the skate park this week putting down earth that will create a more gentle slope leading up to the skate bowl to allow for more grass to be laid.

“We’re getting there and think Wilson Park is going to be a premier park, if it isn’t already, once we’ve finished,” Cliff said.
