WHYALLA PROJECT: Local lads Riley Aspey and Scott Houston instal another street sign in Whyalla.

The City of Whyalla’s street sign project is being rolled out to make Whyalla even easier to get around for locals and visitors.

Council has put in place a three-phase project. Phase 1: Replace missing, incomplete or illegible signage. Phase 2: Replace non-standard signage. Phase 3: Replace existing pillar signage.

Nearly 500 new street signs, with 750 street-name blades, are being put up around the city as part of the $100,000 project.

ONE OF MANY: Riley Aspey and Scott Houston put up a sign on the corner of Litchfield and Mebberson streets.

Council CEO Chris Cowley said the new signage had many benefits for Whyalla.

“The main objective is to make Whyalla even friendlier and negotiable for locals, visitors and our emergency services that need to get around the city,” Chris said.

“Some of the signs around town had become tired or were missing and we had a lot of feedback that the vertical street names were hard to read.

“These brand new signs are far easier to read making for a safer environment for motorists, pedestrians and anyone who needs to get around our city.

“The procurement process to award this work contract has also ensured these sign posts are the best possible quality and meet all the necessary Australian safety standards.”

McMahon Services - Whyalla operation was awarded the contract to replace the signage. Phase 1 and 2 of the project is expected to be completed by the end of November.

Council asks motorists to be aware of the work crews putting these signs up around town and drive accordingly where work is being conducted.
