Motorcycle riders have a golden opportunity to get involved in a very special Whyalla festive event tomorrow.
As part of the GFG Alliance Whyalla Christmas Pageant and After Pageant Fair on Saturday, November 24, the Whyalla Toy Run will again be rumbling around the city streets to put together a collection of toys for those kids less privileged.
Not only are the organisers of the Whyalla Toy Run inviting anyone with a motorbike and licence to be involved in the run, they’re also extending an invitation for anyone to bring along a toy and add it to the collection.
The toys are given to Centacare to put into Christmas hampers and spread even more joy around Whyalla to those doing it a bit tough.
Organiser Perry Zimmerman said the idea for the run was to add the toy element to the regular Christmas food hampers given out and they’ve been adding that joy for Whyalla kids for nearly 20 years.
“It is a really enjoyable event, we get so many people proudly come along with their bikes and a toy to join in,” Perry said.
“Families come along and kids ride on the back of the bikes, it is a really uplifting and fun occasion.”
Perry said the community support for the event is always strong with the Whyalla Apex Club, organisers of the pageant, helping with insurance while other charities have come along and helped raise money and locals businesses also chip in.
The Toy Run will have a trailer where anyone can put a toy in. This trailer will be at Ada Ryan Gardens immediately after the pageant for anyone wishing to donate. Perry said they get enough fluffy toys so toys for older children would be appreciated.
Those interested in participating just need to turn up to the Whyalla Public Library at 4pm for a 4.30pm start. The Toy Run rumbles down the pageant route before the floats get on their way.
