TAKING SHAPE: The framework goes up for the new toilet at Ada Ryan Gardens.

The City of Whyalla advises that the existing female toilets at Ada Ryan Gardens will be closed today and tomorrow (December 19-20) while construction continues on the new adjacent toilet for those living with a disability.

The contractors installing the new Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant toilets at the gardens are knocking out the old ramp leading into the existing female toilets to match in with the floor height of the new toilet.

This also allows the work to done with one pour of concrete to minimise any future access disruptions to the female toilets as well as giving a better overall finish to the merging ramps.

WELL POSITIONED: Framework for the new toilet next to the existing facilities.

The paved paths leading to and from the toilets will also be lifted and relayed to reflect this new ramp/floor entry height early in the New Year. In the meantime, crusher dust ramps will temporarily mitigate any tripping hazards until the work is completed.

The new toilet will be coloured to match the existing toilets while blending into the surrounds of Ada Ryan Gardens.

Councillor Zia Westerman, who was this week appointed to Council’s Aged Care and Disability Focus Group, said the new toilet continues Council’s commitment to provide accessible, safe and compliant facilities for those living with a disability.

“It is a fantastic new facility that will be give people more chance to get out of the house and enjoy our gardens,” Cr Westerman said.

“We are definitely moving towards being a more disability-friendly city.

“The other bonus will be those living with a disability won’t have to line up to go to the toilet as much.”

PLANS: The layout for the new toilet in Ada Ryan Gardens

The new toilet block was budgeted for in the 2017/18 financial year. Open Spaces Grant Funding of $221,485 was received for four district park upgrades. Council matched this funding, dollar for dollar, to provide a total project budget of $442,997.

A total of $165,000 of these funds was to be used at the Ada Ryan Gardens with $100,000 specifically to upgrade the existing toilets, including the addressing of DDA compliance/accessibility issues.

Female toilets remain open in the foreshore precinct.
