There will be three days of creative art and films in Whyalla starting on Sunday.

The City of Whyalla and partners are presenting three days of activities and movie-going with mosaic workshops for the foreshore cuttlefish seat and a disability inclusive seat along with the Sit Down Shutup and Watch film festival.

The three days of events is being organised by Council in co-operation with Country Arts SA, the Australian Government Regional Arts Fund, Tutti and the City of Whyalla Youth Advisory Committee (YAC).

Council Arts & Cultural Facilitator Deb Hughes said the mosaic workshops were a golden opportunity to work with Port Lincoln artist Karen Carr and be involved in creating a foreshore cuttlefish seat centrepiece and a practical meeting solution seating arrangement for those living with a disability.

“We have had a great turnout of people from the community over the first six days of the workshops with 35 Whyallians turning up to help create our awesome cuttlefish seat,” Deb said.

“It’s a slow process but one that will look amazing.”

The three days of activities starts with a community mosaic workshop on Sunday, December 2 from 10am to 4pm in the Girl Guide Hall at Jessop White Park to work on the foreshore centrepiece.

On Monday, December 3, there will be another mosaic workshop at the Middleback Arts Centre (MAC) from 11am to 3pm with a disability focus to start work on the inclusive seating for the foreshore. This workshop is part of the FREE Sit Down Shutup and Watch film festival which starts 12.30pm with a series of movies by film-makers with a learning disability.

More community mosaic workshops will be held between 6-9pm on Monday, December 3 at the Girl Guide Hall and again on Tuesday, December 4 from 9am to 3pm.

Monday’s day of activities at the MAC will honor people with disabilities, their families and carers. It was initated by Zia and Cyanne Westerman from YAC.

The mosaic workshop will kick off the art project to create an inclusive seating arrangement at the foreshore for people with disability. Once again, Karen Carr will be the consultant artist for the project funded by the Regional Arts Fund via Country Arts SA. This workshop, designed for those with a disability, will continue during the FREE Sit Down Shutup and Watch film festival which will showcase the Best of the Fest from Tutti Arts’ ‘Sit Down, Shut Up and Watch’ film festival.
