Whyalla’s new jetty has taken another big step forward with the construction tender released this morning.
The City of Whyalla issued a “Request for Tender 2018-001 for Removal of Existing Whyalla Jetty & Construction of a New Whyalla Jetty” on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.
Closing date for tender applications is Wednesday, November 14, 2018, with Council keen to move forward so materials orders can be placed. The release of the tender will be followed up by a compulsory site briefing for contractors on Tuesday, October 30.
Council CEO Chris Cowley said the release of the tender was an exciting development in the extensive plan to build a new jetty for the city that fits in with the city's transformation framework.
“This is a significant day as we continuing moving forward to this magnificent new jetty for our city,” Mr Cowley said.
“As a Council we’ve been working hard to bring this project to fruition and this tender for construction is one of the major steps in the process.
“We will soon find out who can build this jetty for us and then start to put in orders for materials.
“The process has taken longer than anticipated. This is due to the extensive nature of the project, the importance of getting everything right and getting the right approvals.”
The process includes a 120-page development application to obtain government approval and the fact Council is working to ensure local labour and materials are used where possible.
“We want this to be a feature of our city that as many people in the community can benefit from and have some ownership of,” Mr Cowley said.
Dropping the existing jetty to form a false reef below the new structure has been ruled out for public safety reasons and because the collapsed structure would interfere with construction of the new jetty.
