The City of Whyalla has included $281,000 in the draft budget for drainage work

The City of Whyalla has included $281,000 in the 2018-19 Draft Business Plan and Budget to continue stormwater management work.

This proposed funding would enable projects to alleviate potential flooding issues in three key areas of the city.

The funding would allowed work in the McLennan Avenue precinct to prevent ponding issues on the road. The proposed work would divert water from this area into Civic Park where it can be taken away more efficiently in the park’s systems of drainage.

dinkus2Another project would be in the Walls Street area where ponding can occur near the drop-off point for the Whyalla Town Primary. Work would involve a proposed project to divert this water to Ada Ryan Gardens were it would be used for irrigation of trees.

The third project to benefit from this funding would be maintenance of the open channel that leads to the Lincoln Highway from Whyalla Jenkins. Work would be undertaken to keep this drain clear of vegetation to prevent blockages along the system which could potentially cause flooding on the highway.

“Ironically, because we live in a dry climate, the issue of stormwater management is vitally important,” City of Whyalla CEO Chris Cowley said.

“We may not have much rain for most of the year but when it comes, it can be severe so we need to make sure our stormwater system can cope with the sudden influx of water.

“We have an ongoing commitment to stormwater projects.”

A continuation of this stormwater management plan includes public consultation this year to outline future stormwater plans and projects.

Submissions and questions on the draft plan and budget can be submitted until close of business June 19 with an online form or via email council@whyalla.sa.gov.au and also at the Civic Building front counter.
