SA Water has informed residents of an issue at the Whyalla Wastewater Treatment Plant.

After numerous enquiries from residents, the City of Whyalla has established the source of a foul smell that has hung around at various times in the city.

stackAn investigation by council officers of the areas mentioned by residents established that there were no council facilities or operations in the mentioned areas that could be responsible. A subsequent check with SA Water confirmed it was an issue at the Whyalla Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In a letter dated January 25, 2018, SA Water informed residents in the immediate area of the reasons for the smell.

In the letter, SA Water said a recent power outage at the Whyalla Wastewater Treatment Plant caused damage to a lagoon aerator, resulting in a temporary increase in odours noticed from the plant.

SA Water said it had since replaced the damaged infrastructure and odour from the plant would continue to subside throughout the week.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience that the odour may cause and thank you for your patience,” SA Water said in the letter.

“We will continue to keep you updated on our progress.”
