A snapshot from the City of Whyalla ordinary meeting on Monday, February 19, 2018.
Councillors David Knox, Rick Santucci, Tom Antonio and Colin Carter were not present. Cr Antonio has taken leave to run for the seat of Giles at next month’s State Election and Cr Carter is on leave.
PUBLIC QUESTION TIME: Raj Rajamani and Geraldine Gillen presented questions to the council which were answered.
MOUNT LAURA HOMESTEAD MUSEUM: Councillor Tim Breuer commended the $66,164 in work planned for the Mount Laura Homestead Museum that includes a skillion veranda for the blacksmith’s shop, a veranda for the western side of the museum reception, add and roll road base for the parking areas and driveway and information signs. He did, however, ask that a more formal plan be put in place for future works. Council CEO Chris Cowley agreed and said this would be done.
ROAD SURFACING AND PAVEMENT RECONSTRUCTION: An infrastructure report detailed that Council had awarded a $1.9m contract for road surfacing and pavement reconstructions to Boral Asphalt SA. It was initially hoped that working in co-operation with the Port Pirie and Port Augusta councils, to obtain one tender for all three cities’ work, would result in significant savings. The different demands of the cities made this unworkable.
DOLPHIN MANAGEMENT: In the Chief Executive’s Report it was stated that the City of Whyalla was working on a management plan for the dolphins in the city’s marina. Representatives from Council are working with the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources and would be meeting with Professor Mike Bossley who set up the dolphin sanctuary in Adelaide’s Port River.
AIRPORT MASTER PLAN: Councillor Tim Breuer moved a motion to rescind Council Resolution C3272-2017 from the December 18 meeting “That Council revisit the current Airport Master Plan and investigate the inclusion for upgrades that would be required to accommodate interstate and international flights.” A second motion was carried to defer this motion to a meeting where more councillors were present.
WESTLANDS SHOPPING CENTRE AND SURROUNDS: Councillor Tim Breuer moved a motion that the Whyalla City Council scope out a master plan for Civic Park, Schultz Park and the surrounds, including Westland Shopping Centre, and seek a quotation for the development of the plan in readiness for the inclusion in the 2018/19 budget. Cr Breuer said the area was looking tired and should be looked at for possible redevelopment. This was carried.
This a brief summary of the business conducted at the meeting. The exact minutes of the meeting will be available in the near future on the council website.
