Whyalla’s Wilson Park upgrade is edging closer to a finish with recent works nearing completion and construction of the skate park now underway.

The most recent works have included the fencing, floodlighting and surfacing of the new tennis and basketball courts at the park. The line marking of the courts will take place when the newly-laid surface is ready.

The area for the new skate park has now been fenced off for construction and earthworks have started on what will be the final piece in the Wilson Park upgrade program.

Council CEO Chris Cowley commended the Council work crews and contractors involved in the park upgrade.

“Wilson Park is such an important part of our city, it is the gateway to our city for a lot of visitors,” Mr Cowley said.

“This upgrade program has created a gateway that is not only impressive, it is a wonderful area with great facilities for everyone in Whyalla and visitors to enjoy.

“The grassed areas, the new play equipment, the courts and facilities and now the new skate park … it is a credit to the Council infrastructure department, work crews and the contractors that have worked on this fantastic upgrade.”

The skate park will feature a coloured concrete “bowl design” designed to give a half-pipe experience. It will be approximately 20x20m and ideal for beginner and intermediate skaters and scooter riders. There will also be a block which can be used for tricks and grinds.

The skate park area will be illuminated with an adjustable solar lighting system to enable people to use it into the early evening and provide security at night.

Work crews are aiming for it to be open by later this month or early July.
