ON SITE: Builders and suppliers inspect the site for the new jetty.
More than 20 building contractors and suppliers received a clear message about the importance of local content when they attended a Whyalla New Jetty Site Meeting.
City of Whyalla CEO Chris Cowley and Council infrastructure staff addressed the meeting in the Council chambers today (Tuesday, October 30). The information session meeting outlined the jetty’s construction requirements before a site inspection was held at the old jetty.
Mr Cowley stressed the importance of local content (labour and materials) in any tender put forward to build the jetty.
“This is a symbol of the transformation of Whyalla and it is critically important that we deliver this in the best way we can for the community of Whyalla and ensure the end product is amazing,” Mr Cowley said.
“As we start celebrating the start of the transformation of our city, we must give serious regard to the possibility of this jetty being 100 per cent local labour and materials.
“We want to see a commitment to drive as much local content as possible.
“Local content, from Council’s perspective, is paramount in the story of this jetty going forward for the next 80 years so the community can have real ownership and pride in this structure.”
Along with key specifications details and environmental considerations, potential builders and suppliers were also given a project timeline that concludes with a “commencement of work” target of Monday, February 4, 2019.
The jetty project is fully funded with the assistance of $1m from the State Government and a commitment by GFG Alliance to donate steel for the structure.
“Council is pleased to reach another significant milestone in this exciting project,” Mr Cowley said.
Dropping the existing jetty to form a false reef below the new structure has been ruled out for public safety reasons and because the collapsed structure would interfere with construction of the new jetty.
