SHIP SHAPE: Rolando Alejo, Nick Yatsenko, David Colliss, Cliff Storr and Dean Lewis prepare the CSL Australia pageant float.
The GFG Alliance Whyalla Christmas Pageant has become a special tradition for the crew at CSL Australia Transhipment Division in Whyalla.
The CSL pirate ship float, complete with ball pit for the kids, has become a regular and popular part of the pageant and the tradition will continue this year. The staff at CSL were busy dusting off the float last week and remembering Brad Newman who the float is named in honour.
Brad, who worked for CSL and pivotal in the floats design and engineering was working for CSL when tragically and suddenly dying after falling ill with leukaemia. Dean Lewis from CSL explained that the float (dubbed the MV Brad Newman) was a lot of fun for CSL staff and their families but also a wonderful reminder of Brad and a vehicle to raise awareness for leukaemia.
“CSL has supported the cancer funds in the past in honour of Brad and this float goes someway to keeping the memory of him alive,” Dean said.
“It has become a tradition for CSL here in Whyalla, the staff enjoy it and we can hopefully, in a small way, continue to keep the issue of leukaemia alive and help in the efforts to find a cure.
“We won’t be collecting money on the day for cancer but we encourage everyone that enjoys our float to make a donation in their own way.”
The CSL float theme will again be pirates with the not-so-scary scurvy float crew handing out lollies while the kids have a ball in the pit.
There is still time for community groups, sporting clubs, families or anyone interested, to put in a float for the GFG Alliance Whyalla Christmas Pageant being organised by the Whyalla Apex Club and the City of Whyalla.
The pageant will be run from 5pm to 6pm with the floats, marching bands, clowns, elves and of course Santa himself. It finishes at Ada Ryan Gardens where the After-Pageant Fair kicks off at 6pm with children’s entertainment, stalls and a spectacular fireworks display.
