The City of Whyalla rushed a generator down to the Whyalla Recreation Centre today after dust from the pool surrounds resurfacing work caused the closure of the aquatic area.
The power supply at the rec centre was overloaded by the extraction equipment used by the contractors which caused excess dust. Recreation centre management closed the main section of the centre, including the main pool, leisure pool, spa and sauna for the safety of patrons.
The Council generator and some extra power facilities provided by the rec centre now has the extraction equipment working effectively but the aquatic area will remained closed today (Wednesday, September 5).
The leisure pool, spa and sauna will be open again tomorrow (Thursday, September 6), however, there could be a lingering odour from the resurfacing. Those that are particular sensitive to this smell or have any allergies are advised to wait until next week to resume their activities.
The contractor work is now scheduled to be completed on Sunday September 9. The area will then be professionally cleaned ready for the new re-opening date of Wednesday September 12.
All other areas and services at the recreation centre remain open today and while the main pool works are in progress.
The resurfacing project around the main pool is to provide an even safer, non-slip surface and also finishes off the outer of the pool after work to fix a leak in the pool disrupted an area outside the pool.
The resurfacing work has been commissioned and carried out, via a contractor, by Council. Recreation Centre management and Council apologise for any inconvenience to patrons. This work is being carried out in the cooler months to ensure the pool is up and ready to go for the warmer spring and summer months.
