A peaceful rally will be held in Whyalla this weekend to show support for refugees.
The Compassion and Justice for Refugees and Asylum Seekers Upper Spencer Gulf group will be holding the Palm Sunday gathering on the corner of Hincks and Nicolson avenues from 2.30pm to 3.30pm on March 25.
The gathering is the group’s way of showing support for refugees in Whyalla and throughout the world while also spreading awareness of these people’s plight.
A spokesperson for the group, Jenny Kondylas said the day was open to anyone in Whyalla interested in the welfare of refugees and keen to learn more about the situation and issues faced by refugees.
“It is a time of reflection, readings, songs and banners to show our support for refugees and asylum seekers still in offshore detention,” Jenny said.
“Whyalla has always shown a lot of compassion for refugees.
“We were the first to sponsor refugees from Laos here in Whyalla.”
Jenny said the gathering was a welcoming, supportive and friendly event.
The Compassion and Justice for Refugees and Asylum Seekers group meets each month at St Teresa’s Church in Whyalla. For more information on the rally and the monthly meetings, contact Jenny on 0438 647 653.
