COMMUNITY CREW: Simeon Spargo, Whyalla Mayor Clare McLaughlin, Cliff Sweeting, Thea Clark, Vig Canciani and Marc Littlewood at the station's AGM.
Whyalla’s Triple Y community radio station has extended a warm thanks to Council following its Annual General Meeting.
Mayor Clare McLaughlin and councillors David Knox and Zia Westerman attended the Whyalla FM Public Broadcasting Association’s AGM where some new members were elected and the Triple Y station’s achievements over the past year and its plans for the future were outlined.
One of those achievements was $1500 funding from Council’s Community Grants program to help set up second recording studio at the Travers Street station. The station has also received $14,500 from the Community Broadcasting Foundation which will go towards the second studio.
“It’s a big thanks from the team at Triple Y, we’d be lost without the continuing support of Council.” - Station manager Marc Littlewood
Run entirely by volunteers, the station has also established an outdoor broadcasting service that has already set up at several businesses and the recent Whyalla Maritime Museum anniversary celebrations.
Mayor McLaughlin said the work done by the Triple Y volunteers was inspiring and was helping to give Whyalla a strong, independent voice and community awareness.
“As a Council it is a pleasure to support strong, independent volunteer organisations like the Whyalla FM Public Broadcasting Association and its station Triple Y,” Mayor McLaughlin said.
“Triple Y not only provides a clear community voice, it promotes our city and can provide valuable training for those looking to break into the radio industry.
“We get a lot of feedback from our Whyalla Council Show on Triple Y as it provides us with a valuable platform to let more people in Whyalla know what we are doing for the city and what is happening around town.”
Station Manager Marc Littlewood said it was a proud moment for the volunteers to show the Mayor and councillors the station studio and explain the work they have been doing.
“We really appreciated Mayor McLaughlin and councillors David Knox and Zia Westerman taking the time to attend our AGM,” Marc said.
“We are proud to be in partnership with Council which has included so much assistance from emergency funding when our server went down to other in-kind support and maintenance of our premises.
“I know we are just a small volunteer organisation, and our premises aren't the greatest in the world, but being able to present to our members, the public, the Mayor and the two councillors the improvements we have made, and our plans for the future, was a huge boost to station morale.
“It’s a big thanks from the team at Triple Y, we’d be lost without the continuing support of Council.”
At the AGM, Simeon Spargo was elected as secretary, Cliff Sweeting was elected treasurer, Marc Littlewood and Sandra Walsh were elected as a board members and Ken Ball was co-opted as a provisional board member. The returning chairperson is Thea Clark while Vig Canciani was re-elected as a board member.
