PRIDE AND FUN: Kids get involved in the activities at last year's Pride in the Park.

The City of Whyalla is a proud supporter of Whyalla’s Pride Week as it kicks off on Friday this week with a full program of events, open nights, activities, tours and the big Pride in the Park event on Saturday.

This will be the ninth running of Pride Week which is organised by the Advancing Whyalla community group. Pride Week was initiated by Advancing Whyalla to promote pride in our city while also giving community groups a chance to promote themselves and their activities.

With major sponsor GFG Alliance, Pride Week will run from Friday, October 19 until Sunday, October 28 with a big schedule of activities around the city.

Pride in the Park goes from 11am until 3pm at Civic Park on Saturday, October 20, with stall-holders, displays, entertainment, free activities for the kids, food and refreshments.

Advancing Whyalla President Keith Sichler said Pride Week continues to display everything that is great about Whyalla and exactly why we should be very proud of our city.

“We’ve got plenty to be proud about in Whyalla and this week showcases so much of that,” Keith said.

“Pride Week is a celebration of everything that is positive about Whyalla and provides plenty of diverse entertainment and activities around the city for eight days.”

The opening of the Advancing Whyalla’s Alex Ramsay Community Hub (ARCH) this week was another step forward for the Council-supported organisation, its annual Pride Week celebration and community endeavours.

More than 10 community organisations set up displays for the ARCH opening to further Advancing Whyalla’s aims of promoting and assisting community groups in carrying out their activities and attracting more members and participants.

Keith said the added interest in the ARCH, which will be providing facilities and assistance for community groups, would start spilling over into Pride Week and vice versa.

“We had a great opening to the ARCH with a couple of new community groups getting involved and a good crowd of people coming along,” he said.

“Pride Week and Pride in the Park is an ideal opportunity for community groups to gain even more free promotion for their organisation and its activities.

“As well as being a celebration about everything good in Whyalla it will also be fun time for everyone in community.”

Pride Week kicks off with the CWA Annual Mini Show Day and an open invitation to the Whyalla Sea Rescue Operational Centre on Friday before Pride in the Park on Saturday and then a range of events during the week.
