GOOD SIGN: The new stop sign put up at the Nicolson Avenue and Racecourse Road intersection after a suggestion from residents.

The City of Whyalla is listening and taking on board suggestions from the community.

Council’s daily updates (on its website, Facebook, My Local Services app and through press releases) on the work being done at the Nicolson Avenue and Racecourse Road intersection last week, not only kept the public informed and aware of the safety measures at the junction, it also prompted a few suggestions from residents.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED: One of the messages sent to residents via the My Local Services app.

One of those was from Roger Sando who has long believed a stop sign should be in the middle of Racecourse Road going on to Nicolson Avenue. The existing sign was on the left hand side of the intersection.

“I have had many discussions with several other people who regularly use this road junction … re tree growth and visibility (or rather lack of it) of the current existing stop sign on the left hand side,” Roger said.

“I believe … a stop sign be put on the centre island.

“We have kicked this idea about for a couple of years and I think this move has been suggested before but not acted on.”

The work on the intersection inspired Roger to send a note to Council which was passed on to the works crew and infrastructure team. The suggestion was duly noted and once the repair work on the surface at the intersection was finished, a crew was straight down there and had a stop sign up in a matter of minutes on the plinth in the centre of Racecourse Road.

FACE TO FACE: Updates on the work were posted each day on Facebook.

Repair work was being done on the surface between the paved area and the road on the Nicolson Avenue half of the intersection. Traffic had pushed the pavers from Racecourse Road into the road surface causing a raised ridge in the road surface of Nicolson Avenue.

“This was another chance to raise the issue and I think many of us will be pleased that some action has been instigated …” Roger said.

“Credit to yourselves for actioning the sign.

“Some people we spoke with said they have never actually stopped on that junction as they had never seen the existing sign until we pointed it out … thank you.”
