LOOKING GOOD: The Travers Street Reserve playground which is now open for use and, below, the pod swing and the multi-play unit.
Construction is going gangbusters on the city’s new and revitalised playgrounds.
The Travers Street Reserve playground is now open for use. The play equipment elements have been installed at the new Ada Ryan Gardens play area and the Field Street Reserve playground with the installation of soft fall the next step at both these sites before they are opened for use.
While the Travers Street Reserve playground has been completed, further landscaping will happen soon including the installation of extra lawn, a drinking fountain and seating with a safety fence to be erected on the Travers St side of the park. Another safety fence will be installed at Field Street Reserve.
The Travers Street Reserve has an impressive array of equipment including a multi-play unit, an extended arm pod swing and a half-court basketball and netball area.
The Ada Ryan Gardens has an intermediate climbing pyramid and multi-play unit while Field Street has a cool flying fox and a multi-play unit. All three areas have more pieces of modern equipment.
Funding for the equipment was gained through a Council application to the State Government’s Open Spaces Program. The City of Whyalla was awarded just over $220,000 which is being matched by Council dollar-for-dollar to fund the play areas and other improvements for the Ada Ryan Gardens, Travers Street Reserve, Field Street Reserve and Pt Lowly Reserve.
Project Manager Landscape, Sam Bourne said the equipment had been identified through a public consultation process and Council was rapt to be rolling out these playgrounds with equipment chosen by the community.
“The response to the surveys was fantastic and it’s been a pleasure to go back to these playground equipment suppliers and give them a list of what the community wanted,” Sam said.
“There’s some really cool equipment being put in and a lot of excitement in the community.
“Play areas are so important to the community and this project is delivering some quality equipment and facilities.”
Work will start on the Pt Lowly Reserve playground next month.
