Whyalla is set to have impressive welcome monuments at both entrances to the city.
The City of Whyalla has secured funding from the State Government’s Community Infrastructure Project Fund and has budgeted further funds to create two entry statements on the roads leading to Whyalla from Port Augusta and Port Lincoln.
A consultant has come up with five models for these structures which are designed to present a welcome and inviting entrance to Whyalla and attract more people off the highway and in to the city.
Director of City Growth, Kristina Roberts said the entry statements would provide many benefits for the city.
“These structures will really stand out on the highway and invite every motorist to turn off the road and come into Whyalla where we’ve got plenty to see, offer and enjoy,” Kristina said.
“We’ve got five great models for these entry statements that all scream out we are vibrant, diverse, modern and actively engaged community with a sense of belonging.
“They will not only create an attractive entrance at both major entrances to our city, they will continue to promote our brand and instill a sense of pride in the community.
“Just as importantly, these entrances will attract even more tourists to our city with more people unearthing Whyalla, staying a few nights, visiting our attractions, patronising our businesses and then spreading the word that Whyalla a must-see destination.”
The structures will be partly built from stone recovered from the old dairy on the Lincoln Highway and complemented by steel from the Whyalla Steelworks.
The community will be able to cast two votes for their favourite designs during a voting and public information sharing period. An online voting form will be formulated and the designs will be put on display in the Council offices, the Whyalla Public Library and at a session at the Westland Shopping Centre where people can also vote.
