Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer was one of many that got a first-hand look at the great work the Whyalla Men’s Shed is doing when she attended a recent open day.

Mayor Breuer attended the Men’s Sheds Open day and officially opened the new outdoor area. She was joined by councillors David Knox, Tom Antonio and Tim Breuer.

Visitors got to the see the facilities and amenities of the men’s shed at the old St Martin’s Church on Williams St. Along with the new outdoor area and garden, on display was the workshops, games room and IT area.

Mayor Breuer was suitably impressed and said Council was always keen to help these sort of endeavours in our community now and into the future.

“This is a really good facility and an asset for our community,” Mayor Breuer said.

“Not only have they created some wonderful facilities here for old and young men, they’ve created a place where men can come, get involved in activities, have a yarn, meet people and do something really satisfying.”

The open day coincided with Men’s Health Week. Council helped with the smoothie bike which made fruit smoothies while those getting a look-around were also able to grab a cheap snag and drink.

“It was a wonderful day and there was even a group of fellas from the Booleroo Centre Men’s Shed there,” Mayor Breuer said.

“I heard one lady joke that this shed was good because ‘it allows the blokes to get away from the wife and the wives are also glad to see them go’.

“But on a serious note, there’s a lot of men in our community that this facility can help, those that have lost their partners, those that have retired and looking for something to do and even just those feeling a bit lonely.”

The Whyalla Men’s Shed’s objective is to improve the social and emotional well-being of its members by providing the opportunity for socialisation, camaraderie, friendship, providing a sense of identity and purpose, as well as opportunity for constructive endeavour and peer support.
