GREAT CITIZENS: LIbrary volunteers Yvonne Byles, Henry Byles, John Wallace and Lynette Steele with Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer (front) during an afternoon tea this week.
Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer wrapped up the 2018 National Volunteer Week with another presentation to worthy recipients in our city.
Mayor Breuer hosted an afternoon tea at the Whyalla Public Library on Monday (May 28) to present certificates of appreciation to a group of library volunteers. This followed a morning tea the previous Monday at the Council chambers where another group of volunteers from the community was recognised.
“It says a lot about the volunteers in our community that we had to have two presentations,” Mayor Breuer said.
“It is one of the great things about our Council-run library that we’ve also got such a dedicated group of volunteers helping out.
“Our library really is like a community hub and the atmosphere is made even more special when we have such wonderful volunteers helping the regular staff and helping the community to enjoy this great facility.
“It says a lot about our community and these people when you see someone like Lynette Steele, who used to work here, coming back as a volunteer following her retirement.
“I take my hat off and give a big thanks to all our library volunteers, all the volunteers we honoured the previous Monday and everyone that pitches in throughout the community with their own time.”
Recognised at the library afternoon tea were volunteers Yvonne Byles, Henry Byles, John Wallace and Lynette Steele.
National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of the nation’s volunteers. It ran from May 21 to May 27 with thousands of events like Whyalla’s are held throughout the country.
This theme for the week was “Give A Little, Change A Lot” representing the millions of volunteers who make a profound impact in their communities and on society, through giving a little time.
