The Whyalla Public Library’s free activities were popular over the Christmas break and they’ve flowed over into the new school year with the pre-schoolers’ activities starting again.
April Hocking was just one mum who enjoyed the holiday-break activities at the library. She and her 3-year-old daughter got involved in the Summer Library Challenge.
“My daughter, aged three, and I have just finished the Summer Library Challenge,” April said in a message and picture sent to Council.
“We really enjoyed getting out and about in Whyalla.
“We went to Wild Dog Hill, the HMAS Whyalla, visited the Port Augusta library and did lots of activities in our local library.
“We managed to complete all 12 challenges.
April sent in this photo of the model they made while participating in the challenge and they also won a prize for completing the challenge.
“We look forward to doing the next one … thank you for organising this free activity,” she said.
April told us that she and her family always try to make the most of the free activities that council and the library put on.
“We went to the Australia Day event, the After Christmas Pageant Fair and the Unearth Festival,” April said.
The free activities for pre-schoolers start again this week at the Whyalla library. Story Time resumes on Wednesday January 31 and Thursday February 1. Gigglepots returns on Wednesday January 31 and Friday February 2.
Pre-School Story Time is a program for 2-5-year-olds to share stories, songs and craft activities at the library on Ekblom Street.
Parents are caregivers are welcome to assist as their child develops a love of books and participates in fun activities in the supportive environment of the library.
Each week there is a different theme for the story and the activity and sometimes special visitors.
The sessions last about 45 minutes and they are held during the school terms on Wednesday and Thursday 10.30am and also 2pm on Thursday.
Gigglepots is a fun interactive 1/2 hour session for babies and toddlers full of songs, rhymes and stories using books, musical instruments and puppets to play with.
A great way for baby and parents/caregivers to interact with each other and meet new friends. They run from 2pm on Wednesdays and 10.30am on Fridays.
There is also a toy library at the far end of the children’s library for those that want to stay on a bit longer. There is a wide range of toys, games, musical instruments and kits catering for the early learning, recreational and development needs of pre-school children. You can also borrow two items for two weeks.
There is no need to book for these sessions, just turn up with a few minutes to spare. For information on any of these programs, call the library on 8645 7891.
