There was inspiration and acknowledgement as the City of Whyalla handed out the latest round of community grants this week.
Hosted by Whyalla Mayor Lyn Breuer, 11 groups were given cheques at a special presentation on Wednesday evening in the Council chambers. Nearly $30,000 was awarded in total with the response, recognition and appreciation shown on the night making it a truly inspiring occasion.
Representatives accepted their grants from Mayor Breuer and spoke about their groups and what the money was going to achieve.
“It was an amazing evening and I wasn’t the only one captivated by the stories these groups told on the night and how this money is going to help them,” Mayor Breuer said.
“I think everyone in the room was inspired by what they heard from each group as they accepted their grants
“These grants are more than just cheques, they are the means to continue the purpose of these groups and will go towards funding some amazing projects and endeavours.”
Mayor Breuer (pictured) was acting chair at the final meeting of the Community Grants Committee that includes elected members and council officers. Several groups that were unsuccessful in their applications were given funding outside of the grants process while others will be assisted by Council to obtain funding from other sources.
The mayor pointed out that the grants were generally for sporting associations instead of individual clubs while the school funding in this round was a “one off” directed more towards the group of students involved.
As a special treat for those present on Wednesday night, Brian Haddy from the Science Alive event conducted an Elephant Toothpaste experiment using Mayor Breuer and Courtney Higgins and Taleah Smith from the Whyalla Girl Guides as assistants.
Brian travelled from Adelaide for the event to thank Council for a $1000 grant for the Science Alive event on Sunday (July 1) while the girl guides received funding for new camping equipment.
Applications for the next round of grants is now open until September 1. To apply online go to http://www.whyalla.sa.gov.au/page.aspx?u=812 or ring Council on 8640 3444 for more information.
