The City of Whyalla has come to the assistance of the Whyalla Art Group as it undertakes remediation work at its Darling Terrace gallery.

Council crews this week completed work on concreting a section along the north-eastern wall of the art gallery. This is an area on Council carpark land.

The adjacent wall of the Whyalla Art Group building has suffered structural failure due to repeated soaking and drying of the wall foundations. Further deterioration of the wall will be slowed or halted by sealing the ground within Council’s car park adjacent to the damaged wall.

The Whyalla Art Group wrote to Council requesting this action as it undergoes further work on the roof cavity to fix the two major structural walls together and address other roofing, guttering and storm water issues.

The group has assured council it has a building fund sufficient to carrying out the remaining works and is looking to secure a contractor to perform the work.

FINISHED PRODUCT: The concrete section that will help shore up the art gallery.

Council CEO Chris Cowley said the 1.2m wide and 1.8m long reinforced concrete slab in the Council carpark was approved at the August ordinary Council meeting by the elected members with the estimated $4000 cost to be paid out of the Community Assistance Program.

“As the Whyalla Art Group Incorporated is a not-for-profit community group which contributes culturally and socially to Whyalla, and is not in a position to fund the building stabilisation works, it was considered appropriate that the Council contribute to the rectification work,” Mr Cowley said.

The Whyalla Art Gallery is open on Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 3pm and Saturday from 11am to 1pm with free entry. Those interested in joining the Whyalla Art Group can do so at the gallery, make an enquiry to whyallaartgroup@gmail.com or check out its Facebook site.
