There will be an Electoral Commission South Australia (ECSA) information session in Whyalla this month for those intending to nominate for the 2018 council elections.

The session will start at 6pm on Tuesday, August 28 at the Vicki Ledo Room in the Whyalla Library where information and a presentation on registration and nomination requirements will provided in line with the ECSA Candidate Handbook.

The information session will guide prospective councillors through each stage of the nomination and election process and assist in complying with all requirements. Pre-election training was also held in July by Norman Waterhouse Lawyers.

The Electoral Commissioner of South Australia is the Returning Officer for Council elections and is responsible for managing the nomination process for council positions.

The ECSA Candidate Handbook is available at the front counter of the Council offices in Civic Building on Darling Terrace or by going to the ECSA website https://www.ecsa.sa.gov.au/?view=category&id=14

This is your chance to have a say in the running of our city with the countdown to South Australia’s Council elections well underway.

The three step “Enrol, Nominate and Vote” process started with the first deadline on August 10 when the roll closed for those people wishing to vote who aren’t on the electoral list.  The voting, which is done by post, closes on November 9 and is conducted by the Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA).

Nominations for positions on Council open on September 4 and close on September 18.

If you are eligible to vote in the council election you are probably also eligible to stand for a position on council. With very few exceptions (such as being an undischarged bankrupt or being disqualified from holding office by a court order) you can nominate for a position on council regardless of qualifications, religion, race, gender, experience or profession. In fact, councils actively encourage nominations from diverse backgrounds to ensure that a wide range of views are being represented.

Voting in council elections is done by post. If you are on the state (House of Assembly) electoral roll or have completed an enrolment to join the supplementary roll, you will receive a voting pack in the mail in late October. The ballot paper in your voting pack will show the candidates standing for election. Fill out the ballot paper and return it in the reply paid envelope.
