GOING UP: A council crew member puts up a green organics bin banner on Nicolson Avenue.

The organics green-lidded bin “Food Scraps are Good to Go” campaign has reached new heights in Whyalla.

Council crews have been busy this week putting up 40 banners on poles along Nicolson Avenue that promote exactly what is “good to go” in your green organics bin.

The campaign is a joint effort between the City of Whyalla, Cleanaway (the company that collects kerbside bins in Whyalla) and Green Industries SA which is part-funding the project.

In addition to the street banners, weatherproof stickers will be attached to green organics bins when they go out from next week. The Whyalla Norrie Rotary Club is chipping in and will be walking the streets in the mornings to put stickers on bins or residents will receive a sticker in their letterbox to put on themselves.

MEAT AND BONES: The message is getting high exposure in Whyalla.

Cleanaway Education Officer, Linley Golat, has been a driving force in the Food Scraps are Good to Go campaign and said Whyalla had really taken notice. Linley has conducted information and practical sessions with local schools, conducted an audit of our green bins and been active in the city with the promotion of what can and can’t go in all of our bins.

“Our last audit showed Whyalla is definitely embracing the concept of food scraps and other matters that can go into the green organics bin to be composted,” Linley said.

“I think Whyalla residents are getting a good understanding of what can and can’t go in the green-lidded bin and they are utilising this service pretty well.

“We had some fun with the fact that you can put dog poo in the green bin and people really picked up on it as showed in our last audit."

Linley sorted through 60 green organics bins and found that 8.7% of the waste in the bins audited was pet poo.

What wasn’t found in our green-lidded bins was pizza boxes which are welcomed as a good source of carbon in the composting process.

Below are some of the banners you’ll see on Nicolson Avenue as we spread the word on what’s good to go.
