Council is installing 24/7 gym access facilities at the Whyalla Recreation Centre

The City of Whyalla is putting the finishing touches on the new 24/7 access to the Whyalla Recreation Centre gym.

Council has finished work on an entrance path to the new access point for the Council-owned Rec centre’s gym, installed a shelter area and new door. The next step will be solar lighting and security cameras to be ready for the official 24/7-access gym launch on July 20.

reccentreThe $30,000 Council-funded project has been done in collaboration with the YMCA which runs the centre. Centre Manager Kimberley Nitschke said the reaction around town to the new 24/7 gym access was all positive.

“We posted it on our Facebook page this week and it’s created a real buzz,” Kimberley said.

“We have a lot of shift workers in Whyalla and this will be so handy for them or just anyone who doesn’t get home until later in the evening and still wants to get a gym session in.

“It also opens up opportunities on the weekend when we normally would shut at 5pm.”

Access to the gym after hours will be through a swipe card on the new entrance situated at the rear of the car park. Existing gym memberships won’t be affected by the new opening times but there will be a $30 fee for the new card.

In a special offer from July 20 to July 31, the Rec centre is offering these cards for the discounted price of $14.99. Existing or new gym members don’t have to sign up for the new 24/7 access and there will no increase in any membership fees at the Recreation Centre.

For those taking up the option of 24/7 access, there will be a small induction process to explain emergency exits, duress buttons and first aid considerations.

The Rec centre’s big launch on Friday July 20 will also see a new spin room revealed with free entry to the centre all day long, no joining fee for new members, activities and a sausage sizzle from 11am to 4pm.
