Whyalla’s city transformation took another step forward this month with funding obtained for improvements at the Whyalla Airport.
Council received $96,928.00 from Round 3 of the State Government’s Support Regional Aviation Initiative. This will go towards nearly $200,0000 in capital improvement projects including the installation of self-serve ULP and diesel fuel facilities and a new forward command complex that will have various uses during stages of the airport’s development.
Director – City Growth, Kristina Roberts revealed that Council and the Whyalla Airport were commended after a submission to the State Government for the relocation of the Qantas Group Pilot Academy to Whyalla.
“Whyalla Airport is owned and managed by the Whyalla City Council and is acknowledged for its excellent, quality service provided for passengers and freight,” Kristina said.
“Even though we were not successful with the academy, comments were made that our airport is well positioned to seek future aviation opportunities.
“With the recent relocation of Becker Aviation to Whyalla, increased passenger numbers and the pending installation of new airport security (by 2020), the Whyalla airport will become a key contributor to our city’s transformation with economic growth and diversification.
“Council’s City Growth team is working with a number of investors, educators and businesses to build an aviation hub that will house a wide range of services and products.
“We have already had fantastic support from the State Government and we look forward to working with all the relevant government departments as we transform our city.”
The Support Regional Aviation Initiative funding will assist in providing vital infrastructure to commence building the framework for further expansion at the airport and increase Council revenue streams.
Manager Airport Operations, Howard Aspey said the city would be seeking further funding for a new hangar and other supporting infrastructure.
“The Director - City Growth and I are in discussions with the Federal Government on the proposed new measures for the strengthening of domestic and international security in the aviation industry, which will include new security and terminal infrastructure,” Howard said.
Council CEO, Chris Cowley said the airport funding was timely as the city continues its transformation.
“Council is working with community and key stakeholders to build a city that attracts people, businesses and improved liveability for all,” Chris said.
“The airport with its aviation growth and opportunities will be a key contributor to increasing the attractiveness and resilience of our city.”
