Public consultation on the planning application for the City of Whyalla’s new jetty closes this week.

The 120-page planning application was put out for public comment and submissions by the State Commission Assessment Panel with written expressions invited until Thursday, September 20.

The planning application is just one more step in the extensive process of building Whyalla’s new, innovative jetty. Council CEO Chris Cowley said the size and extent of the planning approval document illustrated the magnitude of the project being undertaken by Council to provide Whyalla with the very best jetty with as much local input as possible.

The design of the jetty was chosen by the public after extensive public consultation by Council.

“We’ve taken on this project to ensure as much local labour and materials are used on what will be a magnificent structure,” Mr Cowley said.

“With this obligation as project managers comes a mountain of work to ensure all the necessary due diligence is met to make this happen.

“If you read the 120-page planning application, you come to realise how much needs to be considered in building a jetty from the environmental requirements, planning stipulations when dealing with a marine area, right up to the sort of access we are going to provide the community during construction.”

INNOVATIVE: The approved jetty design for Whyalla.

With Council hopeful that planning approval will be granted in the next few months, an equally complex tender document is now being formulated for construction of the jetty. Council expects to have this document ready by early next month and to have planning approval and a building contractor in place for an expected construction start by February next year.

It is then estimated that construction of the jetty will take about six months with an August-September completion planned for next year.

"If you read the 120-page planning application, you come to realise how much needs to be considered in building a jetty"

Council’s management of the project to ensure local labour and materials has already had one significant win with GFG Alliance coming on board to donate the steel for jetty.

“We understand people are keen to get this jetty built but the sheer magnitude of the project and the fact we are going the extra mile to ensure local labour and materials wherever possible has pushed out our initial estimates in the planning and build time,” Mr Cowley said.

“This has resulted in the GFG Alliance donation which will now save the project and all ratepayers a significant amount of money.

“We acknowledge some frustrations in the community with the time-frame of this project and we also appreciate the patience being shown by many as we piece together a project to create a jetty the whole community is going to be proud of.”
