The City of Whyalla has received notification from the Gupta Family Group Alliance that work has begun on train line fencing along the McBryde Terrace rail corridor.
Working with Council for the necessary approvals, GFG Alliance has now issued a notice to inform the general public of the work being carried out.
GFG Alliance is the owner and operator of the Whyalla Steelworks and associated mining interests.
The statement reads:
GFG Alliance is taking added precautions to prevent train‐pedestrian interactions by installing additional fencing along the McBryde Terrace rail corridor.
Train drivers have had to be increasingly alert in recent years after numerous potentially dangerous acts, including pedestrians and vehicles illegally crossing the tracks at non‐designated points; failing to stop at crossings; and trespassing within the fenced rail corridor.
To help minimise the likelihood of some of these instances, fencing is being installed on the north side of the rail track from the Lincoln Highway/Playford Avenue bridge to the Arthur Glennie Drive bridge (Norrie Avenue extension/‘mad mile’).
The work has commenced this week and is expected to take about a month to complete. Work will be carried out Monday‐to‐Friday from 7am to 5pm.
Should any residents have any queries or concerns prior to or during the upgrade, please feel free to contact GFG Alliance Community Stakeholder and Engagement Advisor, Denise Sharp, on 0447 039 358, or via email denise.sharp@gfgalliance.com.
As well as these additional preventative measures, GFG Alliance urges residents to think about the potential consequences of interacting with trains. People have been killed in Australia as a result of crossing rail lines illegally, so we want to avoid the tragic consequences of a local community member becoming a fatal statistic.
